“That was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
